Helpful PMU Care Tips

1.         It is best to quarantine your horses away from any of your other horses for at least 3 weeks and should be THE LAST horse you mess with (just in case he/she had something you would not want to give it to your current horses via your clothes or shoes).  Also, it is a good idea that you spray the bottoms of your shoes with bleach after you visit with him/her during their quarantine period.  The incubation period for most diseases is 7-14 days.  We like 3 weeks as it gives that extra JUST IN CASE.  :)   Be on the lookout for any knots around the neck/face area, runny noses, lethargy, etc. If you have any questions or concerns – CONSULT A VET!

2.         Make sure you put them in a small area.  Do not turn them out into a big pasture as it is harder to bond with them.  A stall or round-pen works best.  A small fenced enclosure is fine too.  Remember this is just temporary.  During this quarantine period it is a great time for them to bond with you.

3.         Feed them only plain oats (crimped is best as they digest it easier) and lots of hay/grass to start with, for at least a week.  Once you decide which feed you are going to use SLOWLY add it to the oats.  Every day add a little more feed and subtract a little more oats until you have completely subtracted the oats.  This is a SLOW process that should take at least a week.  NOTE: You might have to buy a bag of Alfalfa and sprinkle some in their oats/feed as that is a taste they are used to.

4.         A one-dose pellet de-wormer is preferred for any untrained horse/foal if you cannot get the paste wormer in their mouth.  Adding a paste to feed or by other means does not allow the de-wormer to be fully effective.  If you use a pellet daily de-wormer remember that for it to be fully effective paste de-wormer is still required every 6 months. (We recommend Equimax or Zimecterin Gold for paste (they cover EVERYTHING), or any one-dose pellet de-wormer and Strongid C 2x for the daily.)

5.         Horses coming from ND/Canadian PMU farms get vaccinated every spring.  If you are receiving your horse before April you will need to vaccinate your horse.  We recommend you fully vaccinate your horse with Rabies, WNV, Strangles, EWT and Flu-Rhino as soon as possible.  If you are getting a yearling or younger they will not have had any shots and will require 3-wk boosters.  Bred mares will also need a Pneumobort shot every 2 months until they foal.

OF NOTE: These helpful tips can be applied to any new equine you get, whether it was at an auction or it came from someone who does not know the background/history of the equine.
